The new Kalapawai Café, at the entry and exit of Kailua, will soon be a landmark icon for Kailua Town in the same fashion as the existing Kalapawai Market is to Kailua Beach Park and Lanikai.
Don Dymond, a long-time Kailua resident and the owner and operator of the existing Kalapawai Market, which has been around since 1932, will also operate the new Kalapawai Café. The café will feature their signature coffees and deli sandwiches, a wine bar, and tapa style dining.
The building was designed and painted in traditional “Kalapawai” fashion, red roof, green walls and white window frames….a brand unique to Kailua.
As part of Kaneohe Ranch’s public art program we recently unveiled a sculpture of a young wahine in an inner tube (inspired by Edgar Degas’ “Little Fourteen Year Old Dancer”). Facing Kailua Road as most of us drive toward Honolulu for our work every morning, she reminds us to return home soon to take care of our family and especially the children of Kailua. Appropriately titled “Kailua Beach Day”, this whimsical piece was designed and created by Kailua resident Jodi Endicott.
A wonderful and enjoyable addition to Kailua Town.
