This is the latest proposed project for the re-development of downtown Kailua.
151 Hekili, at the mauka corner of Hekili Street and Hahani Street, is a new, 2-story retail and office building. This is one of the busiest corners in Kailua, directly across the street from Don Quijote and Safeway and mauka from the Hawaiian Island Creations Surf Company building. It is within a short walk from the recently completed 427-stall Kailua Parking Building.
The retail ground floor will be about 10,000 square feet and the 2nd floor will be 9,000 square feet of office / service uses, with an elevator.
Following the “Kailua Community Master Plan” (for PDF, Click Here) for designing buildings that are of appropriate scale for Kailua, and to create a pedestrian-friendly atmosphere, this new building will be set back from both Hekili Street and Hahani Street by 15 feet. This will allow for wide sidewalks, tropical landscaping and outdoor café-style dining areas. The building will be situated on the front of the lot, with parking in the rear, to create a more traditional downtown appearance.
The ground floor retail / restaurant spaces are 1,000 square feet to 3,000 square feet, to accommodate a variety of small retailers, cafes, specialty restaurants and boutiques. Ceiling heights for the ground floor retail will be 15 feet.
The building will be architecturally designed to give the visual appearance that it is multiple smaller structures, which will reduce the scale of the building and maintain the tradition of older downtowns.
