New Dedication Plaque in Kailua

July 27 – Kaneohe Ranch and the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation have recently unveiled a plaque honoring the hala or pandanus tree, a significant element of Kailua’s historic and natural beauty.

The plaque titled Lei Ko‘olau I Ke Onaona, speaks of the adornment of the sweet fragrance of the hala fruit and its flower, the Hinano blossom. It is believed that ancient Polynesians brought the hala to Hawaii, and it was planted extensively across the Ko‘olau district of O‘ahu. Remnants of the largest grove of hala trees on O‘ahu, once covering the hills at the foot of Nu‘uanu Pali, can still be seen dotting the windward landscape. The hinano flower and the hala fruit are a familiar and comforting scent for the people of Kailua.

The plaque was composed by Puakea Nogelmeier, a Professor of Hawaiian Language at the University of Hawai‘i. It has been mounted below a 6' by 9' hand carved art panel depicting the hala, done by O‘ahu artist Douglas Williams, on the Kailua Parking Building.
