March 11, 2009 -- For more than two decades Kaneohe Ranch Company, in partnership with the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation, has been investing to renew and refresh Kailua Town. Improvements were first made to the Davis Building at 789 Kailua Road, then to Kailua Shopping Center, Hahani Plaza and Kailua Foodland Marketplace. In 1999, Kailua Village Shops was created on the former site of Hawaii National Bank, followed by a facelift and a signature clocktower at the Straub Building.
In 2003, Kaneohe Ranch Company conducted a mail survey of Kailua residents followed by four public meetings at Kailua Intermediate School, in an effort to seriously involve people in a Community Planning process coordinated by Group 70 International and led by its chairman and CEO, Francis Oda. This resulted in a draft Kailua Town Renewal Strategy that Kaneohe Ranch Company and the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation have been implementing ever since. The strategy includes various concepts, designs and projects to create a more pedestrian-friendly Kailua Town.

Before and throughout this period, much hard work by community organizations (e.g., the Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle, the Kailua Urban Design Task Force, Ahahui Malama I Ka Lokahi) and many hours of volunteer service, community dialogue and research have given Kaneohe Ranch Company and the Foundation the guidelines and principles needed to move forward with carefully considered, community-focused developments.
Since 2004, Kaneohe Ranch has implemented various strategies to improve the accessibility of Kailua Town, including areas for outdoor seating, wi-fi "hubs", wider sidewalks, bicycle racks, landscaping, a doggie fountain and improved parking. Currently under way is the third phase of the Town Center development, bringing a Whole Foods Market and more than 12,000 square feet of new retail space. (Click here to read more.)

Kaneohe Ranch has enlisted the help of local artists in beautification efforts. Sculptures, mosaics, fountains and paintings have been installed throughout Kailua Town to create a more pleasant environment for residents and visitors alike.
