Cool Kailua Nights, a fundraising event that supports Windward health and community organizations, goes to the dogs this year.
But that’s not a bad thing, said founder Danielle Scherman.
“Every year we have so many pets at the block party,” she said. “It’s so cute and they love it, and I just thought, ‘Let’s do a doggie costume contest or a runway show.’ I’ve never seen one before, so I don’t really know what to expect, but I think it will be pretty cool. … This has been my dream for years.”
Just for good measure, Scherman added a runway show for humans to the festivities, too, putting local designers and Kailua boutiques in the spotlight.
Scherman, an event planner who grew up in Kailua but spent a few years in New York running fashion shows, started the event four years ago in honor of Castle Medical Center’s Chemotherapy Department, which had treated her mother. “They were all so funny and so nice and so caring,” she said. “All those things go a long way, so I thought if I could do something for them, to show our appreciation, it would make me feel better and also it would help the community know that there’s these great resources and support systems out there.”
The block party has become a fundraiser for Castle’s chemo clinic and the Boys & Girls Club of Kailua.
In addition to the pet and fashion shows, look for a wellness center, healthy cooking demos, keiki rides, and a wine and beer tent sponsored by Whole Foods Market. Kapena, the Intire Project, a new band called High Remedy and others will provide musical entertainment.
